East Bay Reset: Grounding Your Gratitude Before the Holiday Rush

🍂 Your November Reset Button

The East Bay this week settles into that perfect late-autumn rhythm: the air is crisp, the hills are turning golden, and there is a distinct, grounding feeling that the community is drawing inward before the rush of the holiday season truly begins. This week is a crucial time for a reset—a moment to reflect on gratitude, engage in self-care, and commit to local action before Thanksgiving arrives.

🌿 Spotlight:
Hands-On Community: Two Ways to Plant Water and Pull Weeds

The first Saturday of our week offers a powerful demonstration of localized environmental commitment within Contra Costa County, presenting two distinct opportunities for residents to roll up their sleeves and immediately improve the local ecosystem. These events highlight the community’s engagement with both basic ecological maintenance and advanced climate adaptation strategies.

Protecting Creeks and Native Habitats

In the Diablo Foothills Regional Park, the Pine Canyon Cleanup focuses on habitat protection through the labor-intensive but critical task of invasive weed removal. Running from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 15th, this event, held in partnership with East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) Rangers, targets the aggressive invasive weed known as stinkwort (Dittrichia graveolens). This weed aggressively out-competes native flora, stifling biodiversity in sensitive riparian areas like Little Pine Creek.

Planting Water for Urban Resilience

A different, yet equally vital, effort takes place in Richmond at the Love Your Bioswale Day – Unity Park, also scheduled for Saturday, November 15th, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. This event shifts the focus from simple weed removal to sophisticated urban resilience and infrastructure maintenance. A bioswale is a sloped, engineered garden designed to manage stormwater runoff. The project’s goal is to encourage rainwater to flow naturally into the planted area, effectively “planting water” and preventing localized flooding on the adjacent Greenway Trail.

The pairing of the Pine Canyon cleanup (reactive conservation) with the Unity Park bioswale work (proactive climate adaptation) demonstrates the comprehensive and mature environmental commitment shared across Contra Costa County.

This week, as we pause to find our center before the holiday rush, there is no better place to gather and experience the profound connection between food, family, and heritage than at Burdell, a celebrated Soul Food restaurant in Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood.

Named for and inspired by Chef Geoff Davis’s maternal grandmother, Burdell isn’t just about dining; it’s about honoring the rich, and often forgotten, impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The Vibe: The atmosphere is intentionally warm, grounded, and convivial—designed to reflect Chef Davis’s grandmother’s love for well-set tables, shared meals, and laughter. It’s a space where nostalgia feels fresh, and every plate connects you to deep culinary roots. The menu highlights family recipes and emphasizes sourcing from local farmers and artisans, showcasing the finest ingredients the region has to offer.

PREORDER ONLY: Thanksgiving Feast Kit & Sides, available for pickup on Wednesday, November 26th. Getting your order in now is a fantastic way to simplify your holiday prep while directly supporting a local, BIPOC-owned institution.
